As ex-offenders await their release day, most start to identify some of the problems awaiting them on the other side of the gate. Freedom is what they have been yearning for, but once they find themselves at the gates the reality of what is next can be overwhelming. For some it has been decades that they've been told when to eat, what to wear, and where to go. Not only has the world changed while they were gone, now suddenly they will have to make decisions on their own.
While inside prison most prisoners were blessed with the opportunity to share life with volunteers from different organizations such as Churches, Prison Fellowship, Kairos, Education organizations such as SDSU and many more who devoted their time on helping prepare men and women to leave prison with a positive outlook—ready to succeed. In several prison facilities, we offer mentorships, life-skills training, marriage and parenting classes, and other programs that teach personal responsibility, the value of education and hard work, and care for people and their property, so that prisoners are prepared to thrive in their communities after release.
While prisoners attend programming inside the prison institutions they have the opportunity to learn how to be leaders in their communities and walk out the prison gates as prepared as possible for the challenges that lie ahead. Community Reunification Project works directly with men and women who have successfully participated in courses and programs in preparation of their release. In efforts to best support and provide a safe transition from prison to community we have joined efforts with churches, para-church organizations, and others to support those leaving prison.
In order to be successful our returning citizens must have a “safe place” to go upon their release. A place where they can continue the work they have started and have assistance with adjusting to life on the outside, gaining employment, and reconnecting with family and community. Through Community Reunification Project services are provided to make this happen, including individual case management, life-long support, mentoring, encouragement, and assistance.
